Rivers

Compassion arrived in the rivers’ banks

Where the faith in Jesus settled in small churches built with willpower over lasting materials. The missionaries found homes with dirt floors, barefoot children and adults that earned a living through fishing and farming. This land was known by the Ministry as the Rivers region, made up by the Depresión Momposina and La Mojana.

Magangué

In the seventies Compassion Colombia opened a boarding school in Magangué for young men and women who came from nearby towns.

Students also attended Bible studies and received discipleship. Once they received a Christian education, they would share their time and knowledge with nearby churches in Magangué.

Medellín

This city hosted our first headquarters.

The program to support schools was managed from Medellín. The coordination of Christian educators who visited schools occurred in this office. Bulks of fabric to make uniforms were sent from Medellín to the Ríos regions, as well as financial and in-kind aid. This office was also in charge of translating letters from sponsors and children.

Cúcuta

Cúcuta being a city on the border with Venezuela presented a great challenge because of the thousands of migrants who arrived.

In Cúcuta we learned to implement a more suitable selection process of participants and promoted the support of other churches that were initiating construction. The first beneficiary church was in the María Teresa neighborhood.

La Guajira

In a first exploration of La Guajira we visited fifty churches, some of which were in Valledupar (Cesar). After this we began a process of approaching the Wayuu culture, their customs, and beliefs.

Working with an indigenous community was a very big opportunity for our program. There are now twelve churches that receive training in child protection, support in the comprehensive development of children and in hygiene, clean water, and sanitation.

Bogotá

Our new office is located in the Modelia neighborhood, in Bogotá, a few minutes away from the airport.

A six-story building was chosen and refurbished to suit our needs. For the first time in fifty years our logo was on the building’s front.

Chocó and Tumaco

In the Pacific coast of Colombia, in the southwest, Compassion partnered with six churches of Chocó

In 2023, Compassion Colombia began managing 12 churches and over four thousand children, teenagers, and youth in Tumaco, also on the Pacific coast. Up until today, these two areas are a challenge for the ministry because they have a high poverty index and lack clean water

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.
